About Terranigma
Terranigma is the legendary 1995 action role-playing game developed by Quintet for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, now receiving a long-awaited re-release on modern platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Originally published by Enix in Japan and Nintendo in Europe, Terranigma was famously never released in North America due to Enix having already closed its US branch by the time localization was finished. This re-release, slated for 2027, marks the first time the game will be officially available to a global audience.
Terranigma tells the epic story of Ark, a young boy from the underground village of Crysta on the Darkside of a dual-world planet. When Ark's curiosity leads him to open a forbidden door, he inadvertently turns all the villagers to stone. To bring them back to life, Ark must embark on a grand journey across both the underground Darkside and the surface Lightside, resurrecting life on the surface and guiding the evolution of civilization from ancient times to the modern era.
The game is the third entry in an unofficial trilogy of action RPGs created by Quintet, following Soul Blazer (1992) and Illusion of Gaia (1993). This series, sometimes called the "Quintet Trilogy" or "Gaia Trilogy," explores themes of creation, destruction, and the relationship between humanity and the divine. Terranigma's Japanese title, Tenchi Souzou, translates to "The Creation of Heaven and Earth," reflecting the game's grand scope and cosmic themes.
Gamewise, Terranigma is an action RPG with real-time combat that combines fast-paced melee attacks with platforming elements. Ark can attack enemies with various weapons using different techniques — pierce, leap, dash — resulting from combinations of attacking, running, and jumping. Special objects called Magirocks can be collected and converted into rings, which serve as one-use magical items capable of casting spells. Ark levels up after completing important quests or clearing areas, creating a satisfying progression curve.
The game's narrative is remarkably ambitious for its era, covering the resurrection of plant life, animal life, human civilization, and the development of human culture across multiple continents. Players witness the birth of cities, the evolution of technology, and the rise and fall of civilizations, all guided by Ark's actions. The story explores mature themes including the cost of progress, the nature of sacrifice, and the cyclical relationship between creation and destruction.
The character designs by manga artist Kamui Fujiwara and the memorable soundtrack by Miyoko Takaoka and Masanori Hikichi contribute to the game's lasting emotional impact. The pixel art visuals are considered some of the finest on the SNES, with detailed environments and expressive character sprites that have aged gracefully.
A fan petition backed by artist Kamui Fujiwara and co-composer Miyoko Takaola began in July 2021 to re-release or remaster Terranigma, which ultimately led to this official re-release announcement in August 2026. The complicated rights situation surrounding Quintet's catalog — exacerbated by the disappearance of company president Tomoyoshi Miyazaki — had previously prevented any re-release, making this modern edition a historic moment for game preservation.
For RPG fans and gaming historians alike, Terranigma's re-release is a landmark event that brings one of the SNES's greatest hidden gems to a worldwide audience for the first time.
