PS4 Jailbreak Complete Guide

The original and most stable PS4 jailbreak method. Uses a vulnerability in the PS4 web browser (WebKit) to gain userland access, then chains a kernel exploit to execute payloads. Simply navigate to a jailbreak host URL in the PS4 browser and select GoldHEN. High success rate, easy to use, and does not require any additional hardware.

The 9.00 exploit uses a specially crafted exFAT image on a USB drive to trigger a kernel vulnerability. Insert the USB, trigger the exploit, and load GoldHEN. This was the primary 9.00 method before Lapse was discovered. It requires a USB drive formatted with the exploit image, but is very reliable and has excellent stability.

Lapse is a WebKit-based exploit chain that works across a wide range of firmware versions. Combined with PSFree or VueAfterFree, it provides a browser-based entry point without needing a USB drive. Lapse significantly improved success rates on 7.xx-8.xx firmware and became the recommended exploit for these versions. It is often used with VueAfterFree for firmwares 10.00+.

The newest exploit method, VueAfterFree uses the PlayStation Vue application to execute jailbreak code. It requires restoring a modified system backup that installs a dormant Vue app, which is then used to load payloads. This method eliminated the need for a Blu-ray disc (BD-JB) and extended jailbreak support up to firmware 13.00. The trade-off is that it requires a full system restore for first-time setup.

PPPwn is a network-based exploit that uses a Point-to-Point Protocol vulnerability. It requires a device (PC, Raspberry Pi, or Android phone) connected to the PS4 via Ethernet to send the exploit payload. PPPwn works without any specific application or disc, making it useful for consoles where other methods are not available. However, stability is reportedly poor compared to other methods.

BD-JB uses a specially burned Blu-ray disc (BD-R or BD-RE) to trigger a vulnerability in the PS4's Blu-ray player. The disc contains exploit code that runs when inserted. This method works offline and does not require internet access. The downside is that you need a Blu-ray burner and blank BD-R/BD-RE media. It is a reliable offline alternative but less convenient than browser-based methods.

Will jailbreaking brick my PS4?

Jailbreaking itself is very unlikely to brick your PS4. The exploits are designed to be non-permanent - they run in memory and are lost on reboot. If something goes wrong, a simple reboot clears the jailbreak and returns the console to normal. The main risk is data loss from the VueAfterFree method's system restore requirement.

Can I play online with a jailbroken PS4?

What is an FPKG file?

An FPKG (Fake Package) file is a modified version of an official PS4 game or app package that can be installed on a jailbroken PS4. FPKG files allow you to play games without the original disc or digital purchase. When downloading FPKG games, you typically need both the base game FPKG and an update/fix FPKG. If your firmware is lower than the game requires, you also need a backport FPKG to make the game compatible.

Can I still buy a PS4 on jailbreakable firmware?

Yes. Many used PS4 consoles are sold on firmware 9.00 or lower. When buying a used PS4, ask the seller for the firmware version in Settings > System > System Information. Should I update my PS4 to 13.00 for jailbreak?

Generally, no. Lower firmwares like 5.05 and 9.00 are more stable and have higher exploit success rates. The VueAfterFree method on 13.00 requires a full system restore and is less stable. Only update to 13.00 if your console is on an unsupported firmware between 12.02 and 13.00. If you are on 9.00 or 11.00, stay where you are.
