While computer games and games consoles have been around since the 1970s, it was in the 1990s when they really began to take off, and become such a well-established part of both society and the average home. They slowly became more affordable, just as the technology was catching up with the game designers’ ambitions. These two factors were perfectly encapsulated by the original PlayStation console.

Released in 1994, the original console from Sony was incredibly popular, being the first computer entertainment platform to sell over 100 million units. It sounds impressive but was nothing compared to the numbers shifted by its successor, the Playstation 2. Sony sold 155 million of this console, making it the best-selling video console of all time. We have since been treated to the Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and most recently the Playstation 5, as well as handheld consoles such as the PSP.

Even though it has been around since 2013, and is no longer the most recent console Sony has released, the Playstation 4 remains incredibly popular, with both casual fans and hardcore gamers. Sony are continuing to release new titles on the PS4 for the foreseeable future, so for those of you out there who haven’t yet been able to get their hands on a PS5, there is no need to worry about missing out just yet.

As the PS4 has been around for 8 years now, it has been a central part of the Esports revolution. While many people choose to play Esports on PC, there is a thriving community of Esports tournaments on the PS4. The world of Esports has expanded massively in recent years, as hundreds of games now have individual Esports leagues and competitions that fans from all around the world tune in for. In fact, Esports fans are now looking for a betting platform including odds on the different competitions, as they also want to place bets on the teams or clans they think are going to win these tournaments.

Want to know what some of the biggest Esports tournaments there are out there? Then read on to find out everything you’ll need to know.

Call of Duty continues to dominate

The first Call of Duty game was released in 2003, to fairly little fanfare. The first few games concentrated on World War 2, but the change of focus for the fourth game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, was a stroke of genius. Ever since then, the Call of Duty series has been one of the most popular and biggest-selling first-person-shooters (FPS) games in history.

The current versions of the game that are being played today, and available as Esports tournaments include Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. In the coming weeks, there are a number of PS4 Esports tournaments happening in these games, which are suitable for novice and amateur players, as well as more experienced gamers. Depending on the experience levels, the prize money on offer ranges from fairly small, to impressively large.

Other FPS to consider

If you like first-person shooters, but don’t really enjoy Call of Duty, then there are plenty of other choices available. Fortnite has been one of the most popular games in the last 5 or so years, and it works in a battle royale format. 100 players are dropped onto an island and have to fight it out to the death until just one player, or team, are left alive. Looking at the schedule, there are several Fortnite Esports tournaments on PS4 due to take place in the next few weeks.

Other FPS options are Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, which is fairly similar to Call of Duty, and Overwatch, which is more cartoony like Fortnite.

Sports games also incredibly popular

Not every popular Esports tournament on PS4 involves shooting strangers with guns or blowing them up with rocket launchers. There are a number of popular sports-based games that have huge Esports tournaments. One of the most popular is Rocket League, a soccer-based game that involves players controlling cars instead of humans. It has proved incredibly popular since its release in 2015, with over 10 million sales and 40 million players in its first 3 years alone. There continue to be frequent Esports tournaments for Rocket League on PS4.

If you are looking for a sports game more grounded in reality, and one that has some big Esports tournaments available, then the Madden NFL series could be the best way to go. A big seller and very popular on PS4, it is an American football game that imitates the real-life NFL incredibly well. As the sport is incredibly popular, it is no wonder that there are some huge and popular Esport tournaments available to play in and watch for fans of the Madden games.
