It’s no secret that Sony love to slim down their consoles, take one look at the PS2 and PS3, and you’ll find this to be a true formula. With Sony appealing to the majority of 8th-gen gamers, it’s never a good idea to become complacent. One of the reasons that Sony has achieved such a great following with the PlayStation brand, of course, is innovation.

Fresh ideas, exciting new games, constant updates to online functionalities and considerations to hardware upgrades are just a few of the ingredients that Sony constantly consider. Take PlayStation VR as a prime example, it will companion the PS4, whichever bundle you might already own – it will take your PS4 experience to a whole new level.

Obviously, it only makes sense that Sony would be working on an updated console for the reasons mentioned before. However, the concept that Sony would alienate the majority of fans by introducing something far beyond subtle is most likely completely inaccurate.

Major advancements should only arrive when the performance of this very console become limited, and it seems fair to say that the PS4 has only just started its travels, per se. Once the PS4 becomes outdated, it’s that very moment when a much stronger announcement should arrive: The PlayStation 5. When should that be? Obviously not for many years. In between such times, we have PS VR to look forward to, many amazing exclusive games and possibly 4K gaming capabilities.

For those 40-million+ gamers across the world that already own a PlayStation 4, Sony want to look after you, and whilst they might not deny that they’re working on an updated console, the scale and depth of such an upgrade are probably over exaggerated by a distance. Should an updated PS4 be expected? Absolutely. Will it alienate current PS4 owners? Never. Whilst any competing console manufacture would like to think otherwise, Sony appears to be on the right tracks, many of the welcomed features are expected to be available for current owners, too.

This year’s E3 event should provide the usual excitement, but if you were wanting to hear about major advancements to the PS4 hardware, then you’ll probably be disappointed. You should probably be more excited about PlayStation VR and the games, instead.
