Extending the Life-Span of the PS4 Was A Necessary Move By Sony

We aren’t ready for a PS5 just yet, but the PS4 Pro is likely to extend and finalise Sony’s console’s 8th generational reign. This article takes a look over why the recent announcement of the PS4 Pro didn’t just make sense, but the clarity of such a decision will become clear in years to come. Let’s begin taking a look at where the PlayStation brand is possibly heading.

As we enter an age where technology currently appears to be dictating consumer direction, things aren’t exactly obvious on many levels, and the old fashioned ‘tried and tested’ strategy often used by console manufactures isn’t so easily applied anymore. That said, it would be wrong of Sony to deprive a growing segment of fans who wish to experience 4K gaming the chance to enjoy their purchased titles in a greater resolution. What’s more, as time goes by, the demand to ditch 1080p for a higher resolution is sure to grow.

When you ask yourself the question; Why has the PS4 become the most successful 8th-gen gaming system? The answer isn’t simply because it’s the most powerful system, but rather, it produces a package that attracts a majority.

Whilst power is one of the key ingredients to a successful console, it’s essentially going to become less of one. Other elements to the recipe include value, games, content and service – areas that Sony have excelled in. What am I getting at here? It’s about scoring high on all of these variables, not just one or two.

Before the announcement, much concern travelled around the PS4 community, and quite rightly so. Fans didn’t want to see their recent console purchase as pointless – and let’s face, there are millions of people who own the original edition of the PS4. Yet in simple terms, the PS4 Pro will do nothing more than bring a higher resolution to the table. PS4 Pro owners won’t be entitled or treated to new exclusive game titles. In other words, Sony’s attention is just as much with current owners as it will be towards their new beast.

Sony isn’t applying any pressure for current owners to upgrade, none whatsoever. If you already own a PS4, then the option will soon be available for you to upgrade at your leisure and enjoy 4K. This turns out to be something we call a ‘win-win-situation’.

For those already itching to get on-board the 4K resolution bandwagon; the PS4 Pro is for you. How about present owners? It’s totally down to you.

Finally, many have questioned whether Sony will unveil a PlayStation 5 in the future, those dreaming about a 9th-generation console entry should now be pleased to read that the evidence is now strongly pointing towards this. The PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro fit perfectly into Sony’s 8th-generation console venture. Will it be the last major editions to this amazing console? Probably. But that only means that we, in some future times, will be treated to a 9th-generation powered gaming system.
