Here are some of the awesome announcements from the PS4 All Access: Greatness Awaits launch event

Sony’s recent “Greatness Awaits” launch event in New York was every bit the lively and eventful showing that everyone thought it was going to be.  All things considered, the PS4 seems to essentially sell itself; the console has so many new features and raw potential that it almost boggles the mind.   To call the PlayStation 4 “futuristic” is completely apt, it’s fully-capable of delivering unprecedented performance and graphics to big box video gaming, replete with incredibly massive maps and enough detail to make you question how it’s even possible.  In short, it would seem that new PS4 owners are going to be in for a real treat, especially by the time we reach late 2014 (when a slew of additional games will be released).

Most of the truly awesome announcements featured throughout the presentation related to impending 2014 title releases for the PS4, each of which brought something new and exciting to the table.   Of course most of the focus was placed on the sprawling open-world titles which are to be released on the console, there were also other entries to consider as well.

Uncharted 4 & The Last of Us: Left Behind

First up, we have Naughty Dog’s reveal of not one, but two new games – “Uncharted 4” and “The Last of Us: Left Behind”.  As far as the Uncharted franchise is concerned, this fourth installment at first glance appears to possess a certain sheen and polish that’s quite breathtaking, to say the least.  Firmly entrenched in its action / adventure roots, this game seems to follow the pattern they’ve developed (which many feel pays homage to various movies as well as other IP’s, such as the Tomb Raider series).  The game itself is going to take place across certain parts of Africa this time around; specifically, from Madagascar to Southernmost tip of the continent.  The trademark platforming experience of the series also appears to be present too, perhaps with additional modes being added as well.

“The Last of Us: Left Behind”, ND’s other major PS4 project, is going to be a prequel and perhaps feature the character, “Ellie”.  Undoubtedly it will feature more of the signature stealth-centric, action / survival-horror gameplay we all know and (now) love, but with even more amazing graphics.

Infamous: Second Son

The trailer for Infamous: Second Son didn’t really delve too deeply into the features of the upcoming open-world title, but what they did reveal was highly impressive.  Focusing on the various powers which lead character, Delsin Rowe can use, developer Sucker Punch Productions treated the audience to a spectacular lights and effects show in the teaser / trailer.  Possessing an incredible level of detail, Infamous: Second Son might actually end up becoming one of the more highly sought after games of 2014.

Destiny

Perhaps one the most highly anticipated games that’s due to hit the PS4 is Bungie’s “Destiny”.  Aside from its intentions to fuse several genres together at once (MMO, open world, RPG and a traditional FPS shooter), Destiny is also an extremely beautiful game to behold in terms of its visuals.  Apparently, PlayStation 4 owners will have first dibs when it comes to playing the beta, which is good news for Sony fans.  A big part of the formula that’s working to make this new IP a massive hit is its focus on the map and environment itself, which is going to feel much more “alive” than anything that’s come before it.   With its post-apocalyptic setting, unique multiplayer integration features and enormous scope, Destiny is most likely to become one of the 8th console generation’s classic titles.

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes

Veteran Sony fans and newbies alike were delighted by the prospect of a mid 2014 release from the fabled Metal Gear Solid franchise.  This upcoming installment, called “Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes”, is as much an exciting new experience as it is a tribute to the series itself.  Aside from featuring a number of new elements which seek to push the Metal Gear franchise into awesome new territory, Ground Zeroes is actually only the first half of Metal Gear Solid V, the second being MGS: The Phantom Pain.  Touting the ability to build bases and even access from your (real-life) smartphone, this Kojima Productions will most certainly be on the radar for most PS4 owners when it drops in Q2, 2014.

What does the future hold?

If the thousands of gamers who are already lining up to purchase Sony’s new console are an indication of anything, it’s that the PS4 is poised to be one of the biggest hits in the history of video gaming.  Having pulled ahead with fans after the “E3 incident”, Sony and its new PlayStation console have been enjoying the spotlight (placing punches where necessary and so forth).  All in all, the machine pushes things forward in several different respects, technologically speaking.  Moreover, it’s perhaps one of the most developer-friendly consoles to have ever been released.  When you pair the fact that we’re dealing with an entirely new and highly-advanced platform along with the reality that certain actions have been taken to reach out to developers, you know you’re dealing with a very unique situation.  Game designers now have a truly versatile and powerful console to craft titles for.  If the PS4 is the future of gaming then the sky’s the limit it would seem.
