Top PS4 Games Coming Out Next Month (August, 2014)

So far, Sony’s PS4 has certainly impressed us.  2014 started off with a bang, bringing us lots of big budget titles to sink our teeth into as well as a slew of interesting arcade games to explore.  However, as we move over the middle marker for the year we’re seeing additional great titles dropping, some of which defy conventional explanation.  At the same time, August will also bring us some old favorites (in new form), which again, legions of PS4 users have been demanding (take “Minecraft”, for example).  Anyway, without further ado, here are the top PS4 games coming out next month (August, 2014) for your consideration.  Note* – they are presented in order of release date (earliest to latest)…

The Swapper

The Swapper

Speaking of well-known titles with lots of accolades, we come to “The Swapper”.  In short, it is a highly atmospheric game which focuses mostly on puzzle solving within its decidedly sci-fi setting and context.  In essence, you are stranded on a damaged space station and as a result, need to escape.  It is presented in a side-scrolling format and will immediately be appealing to those who already dig titles like Castlevania or Metroid, etc.  Naturally, it does some original stuff too and places most of its focus on its heavily convoluted story / plot.

Road Not Taken

Speaking of puzzle games, we have “Road Not Taken”, which is also a PC title that’s finally found its way to the PS4.  Taking place after a particularly brutal winter storm, the game presents you with loose lessons about life and loss, all while charming you with its unique art style.  Aside from its standout visuals, this title also brings some rather awesome traits to the table, like the ability to deliver unique gameplay on subsequent playthroughs.  That’s right, according to the developer, “no two play sessions will be exactly alike”.  For the person who likes puzzle games “Road Not Taken” is nothing short of a diamond in the rough.

Hohokum

“Hohokum” has generated lots of interest among gamers and PS4 owners due to its unique looks, style and gameplay.  In essence, it is a non-linear game where you assume the role of a serpent-like creature.  Naturally, you can interact with the world and objects in various ways, which in turn affects the direction the gameplay goes in.   At the same time, it presents an intriguing art style replete with all sorts of colorful scenes to dazzle you.  At its heart, Hohokum is all about 2D exploration though, and the deeper you delve into the more charming it becomes.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare
Sure, there are lots of titles which offer inventive and fun multiplayer combat, but few are able to do it with the same panache as “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare”.  In short, it’s a tower defense game that utilizes a third person perspective; however the gameplay is decidedly deep and often quite hilarious.   To put it bluntly, if you’re looking for a great multiplayer title that offers all the expected competitive tropes but with a fun, charming style and look, this is the game for you.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition
If you’ve yet to play “Diablo III” then you really don’t know what you’re missing out on.  As a single player game it is pretty much par for the course – an isometric overhead view game that presents great hack and slash RPG action. However, if you approach it as a predominantly multiplayer / co-op game (especially with “friends on the couch”) it is magnificent.  This Ultimate Evil Edition includes the original revamped game (with more conventional controls for consoles) as well as the highly anticipated “Reaper of Souls” expansion pack.

Madden NFL 15

Madden NFL 15
For all intents and purposes, “Madden NFL 15” is (as you probably already guessed) yet another entry in the long-running series, and yes, it incorporates more incremental improvements (as EA is apt to do).  Graphically speaking, it’s going to look fantastic obviously and there will be an updated roster too.  Currently most people seem to be focused on the cover rather than the actual content, but that’s only because everyone expects that it will be fantastic and deliver the goods as expected.

Metro: Redux

Metro Redux
For horror / shooter fans, the upcoming “Metro: Redux” bundle is going to be a big breath of fresh air.  In short, it contains graphically remastered versions of both currently available games in the series, Metro: 2033 and Metro: Last Light.  Additionally, you can also expect all of the DLC to be included as well.  Needless to say, this offer grants PS4 gamers an enormous amount of content to sift through.

Infamous: First Light

Infamous First Light

Billed as a standalone DLC package, “Infamous: First Light” details the exploits of “Fetch”, the series first female protagonist.  Imprisoned and forced to bear reliving the events of her past, escape and revenge become her sole targets.  In essence, this is a completely new campaign to play through which not only features its own unique twists and turns but also manages to stay true to its predecessor while also filling in more of the franchise lore.  All in all, it is poised to be one of the better DLC releases the PS4 has seen so far.

Minecraft

Last, but certainly not least we come to “Minecraft”, which is (obviously) already a long-standing fan favorite on multiple platforms.  PS4 owners have been eagerly demanding that a new version be developed for their console of choice and developers Mojang and 4J Studios are definitely bringing the goods to the table, as they say.  While “Minecraft: PS4 edition” will essentially provide the same sort of addictive open world gameplay we’ve come to know and love it will also add some additional stuff.  Specifically speaking here, the ability to make use of the DualShock 4’s unique capabilities and a world that’s 36 times larger than that found in the PS3 version are what’s been included in this upcoming release. To make a long story short, this is the version of minecraft that dedicated fans have been waiting for.
