Upcoming PS4 games to be excited about

The PS4 has officially landed and you’ve likely already breezed through a number of interesting titles, but now it’s time for some fresh blood, wouldn’t you agree?  Well, if 2014’s (current) list of upcoming games is any indication, some truly special titles are dead ahead, barreling straight at us.

Even though the PS4’s launch title list was certainly nothing to scoff at (in fact it was one of the strongest we’ve ever seen on any platform), the following few years is typically when you’ll find some of the more intriguing games being released.  Here are some of the more exciting offerings to be mindful of as the year progresses…

Outlast ps4

Outlast

While there are plenty of great, entertaining survival horror games out there, very few are able to accurately capture the sheer terror which “Outlast” plunges the player into.  As a photojournalist armed with only a camera (and limited batteries), you find yourself in a terrible situation inside of an abandoned insane asylum that’s full of terrifying ghouls.  This isn’t the game where you play the role of the fearless badass who’s packing heat…no, in Outlast you’re essentially a helpless frightened rabbit, rummaging about in the dark, hoping the monster doesn’t discover where you’re hiding as you try to solve puzzles along the way.

The Elder Scrolls Online ps4

The Elder Scrolls Online

It’s the now classic open world Elder Scrolls format (refined in Skyrim) but with MMO / multiplayer elements added…enough said.  Aside from the fact that this is indeed a truly deep, expressive and highly detailed Bethesda game, the addition of the ability (or the necessity) to form your own team to tackle the forces of darkness is nothing short of inspired.  Judging from the smoothness of the game’s recent exhibitions, it’s fairly safe to say that anyone who enjoys free-roaming fantasy games will fully satisfied with TESO, perhaps losing hundreds of hours of their lives in the process.

Thief ps4

Thief

The stealth-based gameplay of the “Thief” series has long been highly appealing to a select crowd of PC gamers, but now the series is being rebooted and released onto the PS4, no less.  In essence, you assume the role of a master thief who possesses quite a few unique skills and gadgets which aid in his exploits.  The goal in most cases isn’t to brutally execute guards however, instead finding elegant ways to slip past everyone and make off with the treasure you seek.  Likewise, the newly brandished “Thief” will feature an immersive world via gorgeously rendered visuals.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt ps4

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Looking to build upon the winning formulas hoisted into place by other well-known open world fantasy games, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” is looking to evolve the concept of a living, breathing game world.  Featuring an intriguing storyline replete with all the tell-tale folklore-like elements one might expect, the true drawing point of this game is in its world, which is said to be absolutely massive and intricately detailed like no other.

Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes ps4

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

When it was announced that the upcoming title “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” would be split into installments, many weren’t sure how that would work out, exactly.  Luckily, it appears as though it’s prologue, “Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes” is going to live up to and beyond all expectations.  Reverting back to the use of a decidedly snake-like character, Ground Zeroes is also going to be the first MGS title to incorporate open world elements amidst classic tropes of the series.  In short, this is the game that serious fans have been eagerly awaiting.

Daylight ps4

Daylight

What’s the scariest thing you can think of?  Did you say being stuck in an abandoned hospital which apparently has the ability to randomly generate new environments at a whim with intent to drive you insane with fear?  Well, that’s exactly what “Daylight” offers gamers, an experience that’s somewhat similar to “Outlast” but featuring a procedurally-generated environment mechanic which promises to make each subsequent play-through an entirely unique survival horror experience.  Aren’t we lucky? …gulp.

Infamous Second Son ps4

Infamous: Second Son

What previous Infamous games brought you, “Second Son” promises to deliver in droves.  Featuring an all-new protagonist as well as seriously enhanced physics and graphics, Infamous: SS is just about as awesome as it gets if you’re into parkour-like comic book superhero action.  The story is a continuation of the after effects experienced in the previous title where we see the rise of the D.U.P., an alphabet agency which seeks to control nnd/or eliminate all those with special powers.

Destiny ps4

Destiny

Yet another truly magnificent and exciting game that’s coming our way is “Destiny”, which is being crafted by none other than Bungie, the folks behind the “Halo” Series.  In short, everything you like about modern graphically-enhanced first-person shooters is present here but with an additional component – it’s also an MMO.  In other words, “Destiny” is what you get when you meld together great FPS concepts with that of an open world RPG, effectively spawning a new genre, the MMORPGFPS.  At any rate, it’s going to be a damn good game; you can take that assertion to the bank, as they say.

The Order 1886 ps4

The Order: 1886

Blend together steam-punk elements with the 3rd person (over the shoulder) viewpoint, add some survival horror trappings and you’re left with “The Order: 1886”.  It takes place in a Victorian-era London, but in an alternate reality where technology diverged and took a different direction altogether.  As a result (apparently) real-to-life monsters emerged to wreak havoc on the world, which in turn necessitated that the knight’s templar or “The Order” take action against them.  For all intents and purposes, this entirely new IP looks, sounds and feels fantastic, it might very well be one of the more interesting impending PS4 releases indeed.

Watch Dogs ps4

Watch Dogs

Last, but certainly not least, we come to “Watch Dogs” – the game which many feel has a chance of actually competing with the GTA franchise (via their own open-world format).  In short, this game promises to plunge players into a world which offers an entirely new, highly intricate and detailed level of gameplay.  While primarily a hacker, your character is also highly athletic and able to pull off amazing parkour-like movements in order to evade foes.   Moreover, the future dystopian Chicago which you find yourself in is just begging to be fully explored.
