4 Upcoming Racing Games to Get Excited About

You don’t need to be a Top Gear fan to feel a little down right now – for those millions of people who follow the (BBC) TV show, you’ll understand exactly what I mean. However, this article is all about the video game aspect of racing, which is probably also leaving you with similar disappointment. The racing genre is slowly increasing in numbers, however, we are yet to see a true gem. Your obvious options right now include: Driveclub, Need for Speed: Rivals, The Crew along with a handful more average titles.

Is it just the PS4 lacking in this department? The real answer to this question is no. This is because it’s also worth mentioning that a lack of games in this genre isn’t just a PS4 problem, it’s actually an 8th gen issue, which means that XBOX One fans are also feeling the pain, too. The fact of the matter is that you’ll actually find more racing titles on the PS4 right now, and whilst Forza Horizon is a good offering from Microsoft, and arguably better than the larger number of games within the current PS4 racing catalogue, it’s unlikely to be a strong competitor against Sony’s upcoming Gran Turismo 7.

The good news is that 2015 and beyond is set to spark this genre alight with excitement for both consoles. Let’s take a look at what’s coming to PS4 for race genre fans…

Project CARS

Perhaps the second most exciting title featured, Project CARS is on track (pun intended) to be the first, true, all-round racer offering for PS4 gamers. You haven’t got long to wait for this one either, it will be available at the end of next month. Whilst it looks stunning, the game will offer depth, which is something that we are desperate to see. This means you’ll have access to over 60 race courses and a crazy amount of cars – and yes, even go-karts are included! The weather effects are also an area which is of great importantance to this genre, it effects gameplay, and it’s something that Project CARS appears to have taken seriously.

F1 2015

It goes without saying that Formula 1 has had serious investment recently, along with plenty of controversy, and has become a transformed sport. This all means that F1 is more glamourous than ever, and whilst this could be considered a bad thing, Lewis Hamilton, from the UK, is sure to be happy with this, generally because he became the 2014 Formula One World Champion. Switching from reality to video games: If the fan base of the real sport increases, then the video game should also attract more attention, too. This can only be great news for Codemasters. In anticipation of this, Codemasters will provide a totally new game engine, and promises to become the most detailed Formula 1 game to date. If you’re a big fan of Formula 1 racing, then this is set to be your obvious choice.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation

Perhaps the realistic racing-sim isn’t your thing? Maybe you’re after some true, alternative racing-action? If this is the case, then Carmageddon: Reincarnation should be the perfect option for you. You’ve got Kickstarter backers to partly thank for this game, this is because $400,000 was raised within 10 days in support of a Steam version. The Steam edition, which recently released, has scored an average of 9/10. If you aren’t familiar, Carmageddon was originally released back in 1997 for PC and received many rave reviews. As the name suggests, this game is full of violence and action, which includes crushing pedestrians and cows for points whilst also watching out for your crazy and like-minded psychopath opponents. You’ve got only a matter of weeks before this game unleashes its mayhem on PS4!

GT 7

GT7 ps4

Name a stellar racing video game franchise and Gran Turismo should instantly come to mind. The only true thing we know about GT 7 is that it is currently being developed. Whilst this is exciting enough, we’ll need to wait until this year’s E3 event to hopefully find out some initial details. Based on the long wait along with the franchise’s AAA rating, we should be prepared for a blockbuster. We expect a 2016 release for Gran Turismo 7, which means you’ve got a little longer to wait for this one. However, be assured that this game is expected to be an absolutely massive title.

Whichever way you look at it, things are about to get far more competitive and exciting for this genre. Whilst Project CARS and GT 7 are currently the obvious highlights, the other titles will definitely provide a difference within their own right. After all, racing can mean different thing; some might want realism, whilst others prefer action, carnage and destruction.

With great hope on the horizon, now might be a good time to start exploring the possibility of owning a PS4 steering wheel, that’s if you’re a true fan of the genre. After all, it’s time to prepare for some quality racing action!
